What’s new in SOPA 2022 Awards?

The 2022 SOPA Awards adds two new categories: Excellence in Audio Reporting and Excellence in Technology Reporting, recognizing the popularity and impact of audio and tech journalism in recent years. The awards will be given in English (across Global and Regional/Local groups) and Chinese.

The Excellence in Video category allows the length of each entry up to 15 minutes.
Excellence in Information Graphics will be renamed as Excellence in Infographics.

In 2022, small media companies can apply for subsidy (please see the FAQs for more information) for their submissions. Each small media outlet can claim the subsidy for up to two entries, paying only HKD$200 (US$25) for each entry.

Entrants should note that the Excellence in Reporting Breaking News category is to honor work that demonstrates high standards of reporting breaking news under deadline pressure. Work that covers developing and/or unexpected events such as natural disasters, political unrest, sudden government policy changes and regulatory actions, and unfolding business and finance stories should be entered into this category.

Each publication may submit a maximum of TWO entries per category (each entry may have up to three articles) except in the following categories: SOPA Award for Public Service Journalism, SOPA Award for Young Journalists, Excellence in Magazine Design and Excellence in Audio Reporting. In those categories, each publication may submit only ONE entry.

SOPA reserves the right to publish the entries. Accordingly, you grant SOPA a non-exclusive, irrevocable, worldwide, and royalty free license to use, reproduce, distribute, and display your entry in connection with the SOPA Awards. You further agree to release and hold harmless SOPA and its officers, directors, and employees from and against any claim or cause of action arising out of your participation in the Awards.

Additional Rules/FAQ:

We are a small media outlet and can’t afford the entry fees for the SOPA Awards. Is there any financial assistance for us?

Yes. In line with its mission to support editorial excellence, the Google News Initiative (https://newsinitiative.withgoogle.com) will subsidize entries by small media to the SOPA Awards 2022. If your organization employs 20 full-time staff in total of which 50% are full-time editorial staff, you can apply for this subsidy. You can submit up to two entries and pay only HKD$200 for each. There’s a cap on the subsidy, so entrants are encouraged to apply early. Go to www.2022.sopawards.com for all Award entry submission requirements.  Once your nomination letters and entries are ready, email us at mail@sopasia.com by February 11, 2022 with the Entries’ unique reference code and we will be in touch!

(Note: The small-company subsidy replaces the first-time entrant subsidy from prior years. SOPA reserves the right to reject applicants not deemed to be small media companies.)
